02 · How monthly solar works

Three ways to pay monthly — in plain Rands.

Subscription / rental

You pay: A fixed monthly fee — one amount, every month.

You own: Nothing — the provider owns, insures and maintains it.

Examples: GoSolr, Wetility, Versofy.

Rent-to-own

You pay: Monthly, like a subscription, over a set term.

You own: The system becomes yours at the end of the term.

Offered as a path by Versofy and Wetility.

PPA · pay per unit

You pay: Only for the solar power you use — usually below Eskom.

You own: Nothing — the provider owns it; you buy the power.

Mostly commercial & industrial in SA.

Monthly, or buy it outright?

Choose monthly solar if…

  • You don't have R80k–R150k upfront and would rather not take a loan.
  • You want solar and load-shedding backup without owning the hardware.
  • You rent, or you may move within a few years.

Buying outright is likely better if…

  • You have the cash or qualify for a solar loan at a fair rate.
  • You plan to stay put and want the lowest 10-year cost.
  • You want the system to add to your home's value.

Questions, answered

Is a solar subscription worth it in South Africa?

It makes most sense if you cannot (or would rather not) put R80,000–R150,000 down and do not want a loan. Over 10 years a subscription usually costs more than buying outright, and you do not own the asset.

Subscription vs rent-to-own vs PPA — what's the difference?

See the comparison above — each differs in who owns the system and how you pay.

Do I need a good credit score for monthly solar?
